Going to use my 45-70 for deer in Kentucky this season. I'm planning on using the Hornady 45-70 Government 250 gr MonoFlex® LEVERevolution®. All shots are expected to be < 100 yards from a tree stand.
Anybody have any feedback on this factory ammo?

I don't hunt but what about the FTX 325?

My H010 likes (but my shoulder doesn't) their 325 FTX loads. They seem to be hard to find in my area though. I think the 250gr would be fine too, see if you can find both and see what your rifle likes best. Here is my sight in target with a Leupold scope.

I've used that ammo in .41 mag, and while it's marginally satisfactory and will bring a deer down, it comes in 2nd place for factory ammo in terms of bullet to bullet mv variation (which means larger group sizes). My preferred ammo is Underwood XTP, which is much more consistent and yields significantly tighter groups, and thereby greater confidence that the first shot will hit point of aim. I suspect that you'd see similar wide variation with the Hornady .45-70 Monoflex, if you did a comparative chrono test.

I'm also looking at some Fort Scott 300 gr lead-free MATCH TUI Solid Copper that I'm going to give a try as well. I've read some very good things about this ammo; in fact it may be exactly what I'm looking for. I think either one will take down a deer if I do my job. Thoughts?
