A Remington kind of day.......

Post by fortyshooter » Sun Sep 08, 2024 7:28 pm

Blew the dust off my two Remington 1858 revolvers with one being the revolving carbine and had both setup with the 45 Colt conversion cylinders.
The 45 Colt ammo for both was my load of 5.5 gr Red Dot behind a Speer 230 gr. soft lead bullet intended for 45 ACP. These are great bullets with a special lube coated on the bullet and perfect for light plinking loads.
I will have to say my most accurate carbine with plain iron sights has to be this revolving carbine. The thing shoots right on point for windage and elevation and I have never touched the sights since it came out the box. Some folks don't like it due to the way you need to hold it for safety reasons but it is very easy to shoot well and the light weight helps it out a bunch. First 5 shots you can see how 3 of them placed on the steel from a modest 18-20 yds. That soft lead bullet really leaves a mark too!
The Remington 8 inch revolver shot well also but I needed to hold it just a touch to the left for center shot placement but had a great time with both hitting the steel. Another well spent Fall like afternoon with temps in low 70's !

Nice shooting my friend. I have heard that the revolving carbines are fun to shoot but can burn your forward hand. Any truth to that, or do you teacup grip the carbine?

I don't look back at the things I can't do anymore with regret, I just look forward to the things I still can.

Yes you do want to 'teacup" it to prevent any injury to your hand but it gives a nice steady grip to it as you pull in towards your shoulder. They put really nice sights on the carbine and I enjoy shooting it. Wear glasses though as once in a while you get a light peppering of spent powder around your face but nothing burning. Would make a nice very handy camp rifle with Cowboy Action type 45 Colt loads.
One issue I noticed yesterday is some corrosion around some areas of the brass even though it hangs on the wall with my other rifles and I don't shoot black powder thru it. Will have to see what is going on with the instant patina!

Like the looks of the revolvers there, some nice scroll and Case coloring.
Looks like some good shooting also.

Love the looks on the old Remington revolvers. Always have. Nice work, forty.
