Range Report Mare's Leg and Friend
I have not been to the range in over a month. I was starting to feel the withdrawal symptoms pretty bad. So what better way to break the drought than to shoot a Henry.
After reading through the recent thread Shooting With Iron Sights by Ditto 1958, I decided to take the old Weaver scope off and give the stock sights a workout.
I shot everything at 7 yards because I didn't want to embarrass myself and get discouraged. I have to say I did better than expected and plan to leave the scope off for a while. I may order the Hiviz front sight from Henry though just to make it easier for me to pick up. The relatively short sight radius on a mare's leg makes the front sight a bit too fuzzy for me.
I started off with some Remington shorts. I love being able to shoot 15 rounds before a reload. I use a small Spee-D-loader it will hold 16 shorts or 11 lr. So I drop loads of 15 and 10 in it and can carry a bunch of ammo.
This little gun really likes the shorts. The first 15 spread out a little more than I liked. The X Square is 2"x 2"
The second string of 15 were tighter.
Next up was CCI standard velocity lr. Ten round "groups" again spread out a bit too much.
The second string of ten tightened up.
After a few more groups I stuck a 2' circle up and got a respectable group.
If it hadn't been for the three that got away it would have been a great group.
Now for the friend, I love this little revolver. It is a Uberti Stallion which is a 7/8 size model. So slightly smaller than a full sized colt clone. Same size as the Heritage Rough Rider 22.
These are all five shot "groups" CCI SV lr. I moved the target in to 6 yards.
First "GROUP" Ha! I did get the one dead center X and three more in the pin....but one went way low.
Second group made me smile a little.
Third group made me grin a bit more.
Final 5 on a 2' stick on I almost had a 1" group if that one hadn't gone high left.
And finally my two pretty cowboy guns. I can't have a bad day when I get to shoot these.

Looks like you had a good time. I have a receiver sight on one of mine and a tang sight on the other one. Both are a big improvement over the OEM sights. My Mare's Legs like the HV shorts too.

looks like really good shooting to me .... as one who has never fired a Mare's Leg, when you fire it do you hold it like a rifle or pistol ....

Great collection of wiped-out targets, Seabee. I'd be please to bring them home with me!
And the picture of your rifle & revolver is great, too. It would sure be interesting to shoot the shorter Mare's Leg...maybe some day.
Also it's perfect timing since you'll start reloading again today!
Good report all around!

Re: Range Report Mare's Leg and Friend
Thank you all for the kind words. I really enjoy shooting these two and they go so well together. I am definitely going to keep using open sights. Wish the rear sight was on the receiver. But then it would need a taller front. The Hiviz front may be all I need to make it more distinct from the rear.
I have green fiber optics on an air gun and my 10/22 and they help a lot.

Re: Range Report Mare's Leg and Friend
I think the hi-viz sights are great for getting on target fast but there are other types of sights that are more accurate. At least they are for me. The Skinner receiver sight and front Lyman Globe is great. The fact you can change the globe insert and change it quickly is a big plus. Skinner would need to modify your front sight/hanger.

Can't buy a mares leg in California unfortunately. Not on our roster of safe handguns, go figure! One day when I move to a free state I'll pick one up.
