It’s like a national holiday in SD today because it’s opening day of pheasant season. Son & grandson having some success, it’s grandson’s first pheasant hunt.

Nice. We used to have pheasants here too. They pretty much disappeared in the 70s. Heard DDT, lack of habitat, and overhunting. Might have been all three. Used to almost trip over them and now... I saw one on the side of the road ten years ago and no more since. Sure were good eating.

A Bird in the hand and a day to be talked about for decades. Very cool.
In CT, many Sportsman's Clubs stock their hunting areas with Pheasant that have been farm raised. Some of them do escape, like this fellow, but as Dave said, coyotes eventually get them. It was neat to see this one. And get a couple of pics, as well. How small the apple trees were then!

Congrats BRM to your grandson (and son) on their hunt. Love the smiles on both.
Pheasants are rare right here where I live but are numerous south of Spokane in what is called The Palouse. Lots of farming there but with the habitat getting less and less every year the numbers are way down. There are some game dept. release areas that are open to public hunting. My cousin used to raise chicks and the game folks would release them.
A few years ago these three hung around for a few days. Very unusual and I wondered if they were domestic and escaped.
