For the knife my brother made for me several years ago. Dont know if I should go leather or kydex/bolteran. Thinks? He is almost done with another really nice one, 1095 stock as opposed to the 5160 in my knife and I thought if I got in the mood making one for mine I would go ahead and make another sheath for the one hes about to finish up.

A leather sheath would be easy enough, I have made some that are more difficult with tooling and inlays, but this video shows an easy way to make one for a straight blade like yours.

He uses some tools in the video to make life easier, but you don't have to have them. The stitch groover you can do without. You can make that line with a compass, then cut the line in with a razor knife. The stitch wheel you can skip and again use the compass to mark your desired spacing for stitching... it's how I started. I drilled the holes on my drill press, and sometimes still do. Special tools make things nice but I started out with just the few things, and built up my workbench over the years.

I made my first sheath with a box cutter and a few basic tools from the internet.

Ive done some leatherwork before and enjoy it alot, I especially enjoy the end results, most of the time.








I know, I need to diversify my color selection a little but it seems I always have black dye.
I believe I can design and make a sheath I was just wondering what folks thought between leather or the kydex, which I have not worked with before but I do know how to mold. I also can set up a hasety vacuum bagging set-up.

Leather is traditional of course. Kydex doable but I wouldn't want to insult that beautiful blade with that. But there's a 3rd option. Wood. Not just plain old construction lumber, but a nice exotic or figured walnut, or ebony to match the grip would be nice. I've made a few wood sheaths myself.

I had a belt knife that I bought at a black powder rendezvous, nothing fancy but it had a nicely fitted wood sheath. A good friend beaded the front of the sheath and it looked really nice. Unfortunately it and some other nice rendezvous items I had were stolen. Wish I had a photo but it was back before camera phones and I didn't have a camera at that time.

DUUUH!!! Why in the world have I not considered this???!!! I too have made several sayas before, and theyre not an easy thing to make. I make them for my Japanese marking knives. I e even made them for Japanese chisels. I do believe you have come upon a fantastic idea there gunnygene. It wont be for the knife pictured but for the knife my brother is working on. This one I think will get kydex.
I know, I know. Kydex? Kydex more fits the type better. It is tough, waterproof, moldable and there is actually kydex that looks just like leather believe it or not. Thats the way I currently leaning but who knows.
That wood idea is outstanding though and I guarantee you I will use that in the near future.

Sometimes I actually have a good idea. Your welcome. I tend to use a pair of small rare earth magnets embedded inside to secure the blade.

ETA: One thing I noticed on this blade was the thumb rest. Since it's lower than the rest of the spine, I'd cut the mouth of the sheath (whether leather, kydex or wood) to conform to the thumb rest instead of going all the way up to the grip, leaving that part of the blade slightly exposed.

That's a really nice knife. It would look good in a leather sheath made like your belt and holster.

I was looking so much at the knife, I almost missed the very nice Smith and Wesson revolver. Is it a 696?
